More history happened today, and since I think it’s one of the coolest stories ever, I’m going to share it with you. You should know about St. Francis and Pope Francis.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio from Argentina was elected Pope today. There is a lot of history surrounding his election but I really don’t know much else about him. I can tell you this however, I love him already. I love him because of his obvious humility during his first appearance and especially since he chose Francis for his papal name.
St. Francis of Assisi is one of the greatest saints ever recorded and he just happens to be my absolute favorite. His is a great story of a spoiled little rich kid that wanted nothing more than fame and glory… Until God called him in another direction. Beyond the fact that he is the patron saint of animals, my favorite prayer is attributed to him. No one is really sure if St. Francis prayed this prayer himself… but it defines his character and personality.
Read the words carefully and consider the implications of these requests. Only a humble, servant of God dares to utter these words.
My prayer is that someday I can say them in earnest.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
