The Kentucky Derby has always been a "big deal" for us. When you grow up with a father that is absolutely obsessed with horses... you learn very quickly how important and thrilling the derby can be. My dad loved horses. It didn't matter if they were Arabians (although his favorite) or not. He read all he could and knew so much about all breeds and sports involving these animals... his affection was contagious. He is always on my mind the 1st Saturday in May. I have to admit, I don't know as much about horses as Dad did, but I still appreciate them. To see these magnificent animals paraded around before the race is always a delight. I can't imagine how thrilling it would be to attend. (It's on my list of "Things to do before I die.") The atmosphere must be electric... with all of the people, the hats the Mint Juleps and all of the traditional things that go along with Churchill Downs... but for me it would be the horses. I only wish I could share it with Dad.
