Several years ago, we were very involved in the Turlock Pentecost Association which is a Portuguese civic club that works to promote the religious and cultural aspects of their heritage. The highlight of the year is an annual celebration always held on Trinity Sunday with free meals of sopas, a mass and parade all in honor of the Holy Spirit and St. Isabel’s dedication and service to the poor.
We are not as involved as we once were, but it is fun to go back and watch the parade and meet up with old friends that we haven’t seen in a while. My nephew (Austin) was an escort and it gave us an excuse to go see the parade, eat sopas and take a few pictures. It is great to see so many people working so hard to preserve the simple way of life they grew up with and with the hope of passing it on to future generations. The kids and I learned so much about the Portuguese culture through our work in the organization and I am grateful for experience.
