There are some movies that are cultural phenomenon and we can learn about them just through social interaction. You don't necessarily need to watch a movie to know what the references mean. I've always known that referring to someone as Nurse Ratched was derogatory. From paying attention to the reference I've figured out that she was a cruel and vindictive individual that held her authority over others, even though I had never seen the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. That all changed tonight. I've made it a point to watch some of these classic movies when I get the chance. I'm thankful for the opportunity to sit and really enjoy a full length movie without interruption (although I did utilize the pause button quite often.) Last year I watched the Deliverance for the first time and could finally put that puzzle together as well. Tonight, we watched Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and I got to meet the real Nurse Ratched for the first time. I thought the movie was great... and it confirmed my understanding of her character.
I've decided I want to make a list. I need to see some of the other classic movies that I've only heard about. I often criticize those who have never seen the Godfathers... I'm embarrassed to say there are some certain gems I've missed out on as well. Stay tuned for more opinion and analysis.
