Tonight I watched Brandon show at the Merced County Spring Fair in Los Banos.  Brandon shows often around the area and I don't always catch all of his classes, but I really enjoy watching showmanship.  It's my favorite.  If you're not familiar with the class, it's when the individual showing the animal is judged on their ability.  All of the other classes are judged on the quality of the animal. I realized tonight that I like this class the best because I can understand it and make assessments myself.  I don't know the first thing about cows, so judging cattle is not an option for me.  If I was in charge, I'd pick the biggest, blackest one every time. (Unfortunately, there's a lot more to it than that.) But showmanship, I could judge.  There are some fundamental rules that apply, no matter what species you are showing.

Brandon is a great showman, and he's only become better and more confident over the last few years.  He works very hard and deserves whatever honors come his way.  It's always fun to watch Brandon do anything because he puts his heart and soul into what ever task he chooses. Tonight he was 2nd in his intermediate class and then 2nd over all in the Advanced finals.  Pretty darn good for 14 years old.
