Steel Update: On His Way
Just wanted to let everyone know that Steel has been released from the hospital and is resting at his home at school watching football with his room mates as I write. True to form, Steel shocked the doctors, therapists and nurses during his recovery. He was up on a weight bearing walk 4 hours post op. He's getting around very well and our only real concern for his mobility is the ice outside this time of year.
Due to the artery damage in September, the orthopedic surgeon did not allow a nerve block during Steel's procedure. Doctor felt the risk to the artery was too great. This change in the normal protocol means that Steel will have more post-surgical pain than a typical ACL repair. But we all know, Steel is anything but typical. It hasn't slowed him down one bit.
Today, as I was helping Steel get dressed to leave the hospital the music on my iPhone began to play. The phone was off and in my pocket so it was completely out of my control. I reached in to turn it down, but the buttons were locked and I couldn't shut it off. The great thing about it was the song that come on. It was "On My Way" by Phil Collins from the Disney movie "Brother Bear." If you know the lyrics, you'll understand why it was a perfect fit for the moment. It's one of Steel's favorites and was a great song to celebrate his departure. It was the theme and the soundtrack for the day... and (I'm hopeful) for his recovery ahead.
There are no coincidences.
Once again... We cannot thank everyone enough for the support we've all received through this ordeal. We see the light at the end of the tunnel. Please continue to pray, but we also ask that you offer thanksgiving for blessings we've already witnessed. They are numerous and profound.
