The news has captured my attention recently. I can't explain why, but I've been watching, reading and listening to news much more than I used to do. I'm not condoning or condemning this activity, just acknowledging the fact. There is a particular balance that I need to maintain between information and imagination. Lately... I've been seeking the information and ignoring the imagination. My writing has suffered as well as my overall sense of creativity. I need to find the balance once again.
In thinking about all of this, I remembered a quote from Fred Rogers that I've always loved. Mr. Roger's Neighborhood was a children's show that I watched repeatedly as a child. The show reinforced honest values as well as a peaceful, creative and selfless attitude. I loved it.
The quote reads: “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”
There are lots of scary things in the news in today's world. I hope that changes by the time you come along, but the odds are slim. We don't seem to be headed in the right direction. It's difficult to find good news in the abundance of chaos that fills our world today. But even in the chaos there is good to be found. Look for it. Learn from it... and if you take something way, take the good and learn from the helpers.
