You already know we're quite partial to football. It's a family favorite for all of us. There is another sport that doesn't get as much attention, but holds an equal amount of passion for us and that is wrestling. There is a sense of reverence and respect when we think of this sport and the athletes. It is an elite group who can endure the emotional and physical requirements to compete in wrestling. As a sport it is unique. One does not play wrestling. For my grandsons, I hope you wrestle. There is no other sport (that I'm aware of) that demands the discipline required in wrestling. It's not something you do for a couple of hours a day during the season. With conditioning and diet, the sport demands attention 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If (when) you wrestle, you will work harder physically, psychologically and emotionally than in any other time in your life. When you master the skills it requires to be successful, there is NOTHING you cannot accomplish. "Once you've wrestled, everything in life is easy." - Dan Gable
Wrestling is not for wimps and it's not for girls either. I know I'll have many disagreeing with me on this issue, but I have to voice my opinion. I have no issue with girls competing against other girls, but I've never thought it right to mix the sexes. So granddaughters, no wrestling for you. I do however expect you to be big fans and huge supporters of the sport. Believe me, being a wrestling fan takes a toll as well. You can't help but be emotionally engaged in a match. The hours and hours of waiting for 6-10 minutes of match can wear you down. But you should always remember that your investment is a fraction of what the athlete endures. Be the support system required to make them successful. With full hearts you will witness incredible feats of will and determination and make memories that will last a lifetime.
