1,000 Words: Anne and Me
This picture was taken at the Washington Monument in Washington DC in 1985. We were traveling with the California delegation to the National FFA Convention. Anne was a Sectional President and I was a Regional President. We were kind of a big deal.
The hidden story behind these smiles is the fact we had only just started to be friendly towards one another. Prior to this trip we didn't have too much to do with each other. I'd known her for years but I didn't like her, and she didn't like me.
In the fall of 1985, I had just started dating Leroy and I decided that I better be nice to Anne. She meant the world to him and I knew if this was going to work, I was going to have to get along with her. She realized the same thing. We each made a choice to make an effort because we both loved Leroy.
And it worked.
It wasn't too long before Anne and I were the best of friends. We spent a lot of time together during that year and in the many years since. I cannot imagine my life without her in it. She has truly become a sister to me. We laugh and tease about those years prior to our friendship, but to be honest, it makes me a little sad. I truly missed out on the opportunity to have her in my life.
